Let us introduce you to our experienced nurses at Salem Oncology Centre: Karla Thalmueller-Driskell, R.N., B.S.N., M.S.N. Clinical Nurse Specialist, Medical Administrator Karla Thalmueller-Driskell began her career in nursing in 1978 at the University of Arkansas Medical Sciences School of Nursing, where she earned her 5 year B.S.N. with a Nurse Practitioner component in Family Practice. She has been a member of Sigma Theta Tau, the National Nursing Honor Society, since 1980. She completed her Masters Degree in Oncology Nursing in 1989, from the University of Texas School of Nursing, and became a Clinical Nurse Specialist. Karla assisted in the establishment of Salem Oncology Centre. She is a dedicated professional and a patient advocate who enjoys taking time with each patient and their family members to educate them about the journey they will be taking with their cancer treatment. Dr. Philip A. Salem began specialty training in cancer medicine at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York in 1968, after which he joined M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas.

During the period of 1971 to 1986, Dr. Salem directed the cancer program at the American University of Beirut while maintaining academic ties with M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and spending sabbatical years there. In January 1987, he returned to M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and in 1990 was promoted to Head of Research Committee, Professor of Cancer Medicine and Research. Since September 1991, he has been Director of the Cancer Research Program at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital.

Dr. Salem is widely published for several national and international cancer medicine publications. He served on the editorial board of Anti-Cancer Drugs, an international journal on anti-cancer agents. He also served on the editorial board of Annals of Oncology, the official journal of the European Society for Medical Oncology. In addition, he is a member of many nationally and internationally recognized cancer societies, including the World Health Organization Expert Committee on Cancer, the American Association of Clinical Oncology, and the American Association for Cancer Research.

Dr. Salem was recently selected as one of America's top doctors in the premier edition of America's Top Doctors, a national guide to outstanding medical specialists throughout the United States. Fewer than one percent of physicians in the United States have been recognized by inclusion in this national Castle Connolly Guide.

He was awarded the Ellis Island Medal of Honor by the National Ethnic Coalition Organization (NECO) for "exceptional humanitarian efforts, and outstanding contributions to America".

He also received the Medal of Freedom award from the United States Congress, which is "the highest honor the Republican members of the U.S. Senate can bestow." This was given to him for his contributions to science and medicine.

Your First Visit

At your initial visit to Salem Oncology Centre, your medical history will be taken and a physical examination performed by Dr. Salem. He will order appropriate tests and later review the test results with you in person. If you are referred to us by another physician, we will send a typed summary of your visit to your doctor, and if you need to take medical documents home with you we will provide them for you.

We coordinate all outpatient testing and use the highest quality laboratory, pathology and radiology facilities. For outpatient chemotherapy, we arrange quiet, private rooms in our outpatient Centre.

Hospital Admissions

All patients who require hospitalization are admitted to St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital which is located across the street from Salem Oncology Centre. All hospital admissions will be coordinated and facilitated by Eleni A. Papageorge or another member of the Salem Oncology Centre staff, thereby minimizing the stress of the hospital admission process on the patient. Without such assistance, this process can be time-consuming, frustrating and tedious.

For information about St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital admission and financial policies, you may contact the St. Luke's Admitting Office at 832-355-2132 or for international patients 832-355-3350, Monday through Friday, from 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M.

Once pre-admission requirements are fulfilled (including financial arrangements), you will be given information about the time of admission, the expected length of your stay and your plan of treatment.

Humaneness is the essence of medicine. Medical care has to be delivered with knowledge and love. Either one alone is dangerous and inadequate. The major challenge now in America is to provide humaneness in medicine. The reason that humaneness is less a part of medical care now in many parts of the world is because doctors and nurses have become extremely busy dealing with large volumes of patients. Our commitment to you does not end when you physically leave Salem Oncology Centre. When a patient returns to his or her home (whether in the United States or abroad) we help to identify an appropriate physician for continued care. We work with that physician to ensure that our patient receives the finest possible treatment. All consultations, telephone calls and discussions related to ongoing care are part of Salem Oncology Centre's commitment to continuity of quality care.

Dr. Salem has an extensive network of physician colleagues worldwide, and is available 24 hours a day for consultations to ensure continuity of care. Occasionally, under certain circumstances, a doctor or nurse from our clinic may accompany a patient or travel overseas to personally assist in that patient's care. For the entire duration of your treatment outside of the clinic, we continue to monitor your progress. This service is unique to Salem Oncology Centre and enables us to better coordinate your care during the whole duration of your treatment.
